Sam Landrum: Maverick Transportation’s 2023 Over the Road Driver of the Year

Sam Landrum’s journey into trucking wasn’t motivated by picturesque views or personal recognition. Initially, it seemed like he might not remain in the industry for long, but the Piggott, Arkansas, resident persevered and accumulated decades of experience, driving millions of miles and earning the title of Maverick Transportation’s 2023 Over the Road Driver of the Year.

John Coppens, Maverick’s vice president of operations, expressed his admiration, stating, “I’m incredibly impressed and encouraged by Sam Landrum. He truly understands how far we’ve come as a company and how much further we can go together. Sam is a valuable addition to the Driver of the Year group, and I am excited to collaborate with him on our advisory councils.”

Though this isn’t Landrum’s first accolade as a driver, the recognition from Maverick holds special significance for him. “What made it unique is that it was fellow drivers who voted for me,” he shared. “It meant a lot to hear from my peers, saying they supported my nomination.”

From Farming to Trucking

Landrum’s connection to trucking began early in life, influenced by his family’s involvement in the industry. However, it wasn’t until the collapse of farming in the 1980s that he considered a shift in his career. After graduating high school in 1975, he worked alongside his father on their farm until management challenges in 1981 forced him to transition to a new path.

Discovering a Passion for Driving

It was a local delivery truck job offer from a church connection that changed everything for Landrum. After gaining confidence behind the wheel, he received a chance to drive a semi. “I was incredibly nervous, but once I got started, I found joy in driving,” he said, reminiscing about his daunting first trip to Colorado.

“Back then, we didn’t have GPS or cellphones. If we needed help, we relied on maps and fellow drivers,” he added, emphasizing how much the camaraderie among truckers has changed over the years.

Having spent the last three decades with Maverick, Landrum’s passion for trucking has only grown. His commitment has earned him multiple nominations for Driver of the Month, culminating in his current recognition as Driver of the Year. Now, he delivers materials for the construction and automotive industries within a 700-mile radius of his home.

A Special Support System

“I am grateful for my wife, who has been my rock while I worked to support our family,” he said. Landrum appreciates his long association with Maverick, calling it a lifesaver: “I couldn’t have asked for a better company. With 30 years and 3 million safe miles under my belt, I have nothing but positive things to say about Maverick.”
