To keep freight moving smoothly across the country, semitrucks need fuel, routine maintenance, and occasional repairs—but taking care of your heart is critical for on-time deliveries.
Heart disease is the top cause of death in the U.S., responsible for one in three fatalities, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
With February designated as American Heart Month, it’s a great time to focus on the most vital engine on the road: your heart! Engaging in preventative care now can contribute to long-term heart health.
Truck Drivers Face Increased Heart Disease Risks
Long periods of sitting, irregular sleep patterns, and limited access to nutritious foods can hinder truck drivers from prioritizing their health. The constant stress of managing tight delivery schedules, locating parking, and dealing with unexpected delays exacerbates the situation.
For over-the-road (OTR) truckers, these job demands often heighten the risk for chronic health issues, including hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea—all contributing factors to heart disease.
Fortunately, many heart disease risk factors can be prevented or managed effectively. Additionally, small, consistent lifestyle changes can lead to significant improvements. The St. Christopher Fund (SCF) emphasizes sustainable health transformations in all its wellness initiatives.
Free Resources from SCF for Truckers’ Health
The Driven to be Healthy program comprises various health and wellness initiatives offered at no cost to Class A OTR drivers, made possible by generous sponsors committed to SCF’s mission of accessible health resources for drivers nationwide.
Through these initiatives, SCF aims to help truck drivers mitigate risk factors for prevalent health issues that often lead to drivers leaving the profession each year, such as heart attacks and diabetes-related complications.
Importantly, all SCF programs are specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by OTR drivers. Let’s explore some of these programs and their benefits for heart health.
Establishing Healthy Habits for Longevity
The Healthy Habits for the Long Haul is a 12-week virtual program focused on managing chronic health conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
Participants learn in small groups about nutrition labels, grocery shopping, meal prep while traveling, sleep science, and more. Each driver receives health tracking tools, including a glucose meter, scale, blood pressure cuff, fitness tracker, and resistance bands.
Addressing chronic health issues is crucial as many increase the risk of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, which damages arteries and may lead to blockages.
