Nurses from Bath and North East Somerset Enhanced Medical Services (BEMS) and the Wiltshire Health Improvement Hub provided blood pressure assessments and health advice at the Chippenham Pit Stop in Wiltshire.
Long hours away from home often make it challenging for truck drivers to access general practitioner services and other medical care.
HGV driver Alan Tunmore, who manages type two diabetes and works approximately 60-65 hours weekly, expressed that having his blood pressure checked at the lorry park was “reassuring.”

A Positive Initiative
Tunmore stated, “It’s a great approach since many drivers are on the road throughout the week, working 12-15 hours daily.” He added, “On Fridays, I usually return home at nine in the evening, and the last thing you want is to visit the doctor, especially if you’re not feeling well; you just want to rest.”
NHS nurses provided health screenings and advice to drivers at the truck stop.
Community nurses collaborated with the Wiltshire Council’s Health Improvement Hub, offering drivers insights on weight management and smoking cessation.
BEMS nurse Becky Park mentioned, “It’s crucial to educate them on reducing salt intake and suggest simple exercises, even just ten minutes of activity at the back of their truck.” She noted that many are unaware of their blood pressure issues until it’s too late, which can lead to severe health risks like strokes and heart disease.

David Hatherell, the truck stop’s manager, emphasized that the tireless work of the nation’s truckers is often overlooked, stating, “Without these drivers working long hours, the economy would grind to a standstill.”
The NHS walk-in clinic will return to the Chippenham Pit Stop on 20 May, where drivers can either reserve a time slot or arrive on the day.
