Employees at a truck stop have initiated a month-long effort encouraging drivers to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diet for improved heart health.
The “Love Your Hearts” campaign at the Chippenham Pit Stop near junction 17 on the M4 runs for the entire month of February in honor of Valentine’s Day.
Through the initiative, truck drivers are encouraged to consume 30 plant-based items weekly by making simple dietary changes, such as adding nuts to their breakfast or varying their daily fruits.
Lucy Hatherall, 29, an employee at the Pit Stop, mentioned, “Lorry drivers often lead sedentary lifestyles, spending long hours in their vehicles. Our focus is on improving gut health to reduce inflammation and lower heart disease risks.”
James Mitchell, 49, a long-haul driver who frequently stays at the Pit Stop after his 12-hour shifts, noted that finding healthy and reasonably-priced food options at motorway services can be challenging.
“I prefer stopping at the Pit Stop over typical service areas that mainly offer fast food. More quality truck stops like this are essential for our industry,” he added.
Jo Burton, 52, who is the front-of-house supervisor at the Pit Stop, shared that they offer around 160 overnight parking spaces for HGVs. “It often gets busy, and drivers need a good meal. A warm welcome and a chat are far better than reheating a meal in the cab,” she remarked.
Hatherall emphasized that this health initiative aims to shift perceptions about food choices. “Many campaigns focus on restrictions, like counting calories or avoiding certain treats, but we want to show drivers how adding nutritious options can positively impact their lifestyle and diet,” she explained.
