Fitness Challenges for Truck Drivers
Truck driving and fitness often don’t go together. Many drivers struggle to maintain a healthy diet while on the road, making it even harder to incorporate exercise into their daily routine. Consequently, as time goes on, many in the trucking industry find their health deteriorating.
Nathan Bugg’s Transformation
This was true for Nathan Bugg, a truck driver from Texas, who reached 265 pounds after years of working for a local fleet he shared with his brother. His life took a dramatic turn when his brother challenged him to a $500 bet that he couldn’t run a marathon within a year.
The Turning Point
“I gained weight like many truckers do—just living the lifestyle,” Bugg shares. “After the bet in February 2007, I lost 70 pounds and completed the Houston marathon a year later.” Since then, Bugg has significantly surpassed his original goal, completing the Arizona Ironman triathlon in November 2015 and aiming for the Galveston Half Ironman in April.
Training Journey
Training for his first marathon was a gradual process for Bugg. He began with short distances, progressing from running a single mile to eventually covering 3 to 6 miles daily, with progressively longer runs on weekends. Once he completed a marathon, he sought new challenges and found a passion for cross-training, eventually leading him to triathlons.
Adapting to Trucking Life
As Nathan took on longer regional routes, maintaining a workout routine became more complex. He addressed this by planning ahead to find gym locations along his routes, often incorporating running to and from the gym during the day. He prioritizes morning workouts but typically works around his driving schedule, using his breaks for exercise whenever possible.
Healthy Eating on the Road
Another hurdle for Bugg is maintaining a healthy diet while driving. Although some truck stops offer healthier options, it remains a challenge to find nutritious meals. Bugg takes advantage of available choices, opting for fruits and turkey sandwiches when he can.
Inspiration and Commitment
A weekly training schedule for Bugg is structured yet flexible. He often includes swimming, cycling, and running, balancing his workouts with his trucking responsibilities. He believes that any truck driver can implement a manageable exercise routine with the right mindset and discipline. “Prioritize your health,” advises Bugg. “Even if it’s just walking at a truck stop, make sure to find time for yourself every day.”
