BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Celebrating 75 Years of J&M Tank Lines Inc.

J&M Tank Lines Inc. is proudly marking its 75th anniversary as a family-run trucking business based in Birmingham, Alabama.

Founding and Early Days

Established in 1948 by Jimmie McClinton with a modest $125 loan from Peoples Bank in Selma, Alabama, J&M started its journey with a single truck primarily transporting baled cotton and peanuts throughout the Southeastern U.S.

Growth and Transition of Leadership

In the early 1960s, Harold Sumerford Sr. became a key player at J&M as a bookkeeper and assistant manager at the company’s headquarters in Americus, Georgia. He later became McClinton’s significant partner.

After McClinton’s passing in the early 1980s, Sumerford Sr. assumed full ownership of J&M, expanding it to over 500 tractors and a diverse range of flatbed, van, and tank trailers.

Next Generation Takes the Helm

Following their father’s legacy, Harold Sumerford Jr. and Peter Sumerford joined J&M in the late 1970s and late 1980s, respectively. They started from entry-level positions, doing tasks like sweeping shop floors and washing trailers.

“Being part of such a significant milestone for a family-owned business is a source of pride. Our drivers’ daily commitments to fulfilling J&M’s promises to clients are commendable,” stated Peter Sumerford, the current president.

Specialization and Modern Operations

In 2002, with Sumerford Sr.’s retirement, Harold Jr. and Peter took charge and shifted J&M’s focus toward specialized tank services, aiming to establish a leading dry-bulk company with tailored customer solutions.

Today, J&M operates with a fleet of 450 tractors and 800 trailers across 11 terminals located in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas. The presence of sister companies, including TransChem USA, Specialized Delivery Systems, and Sumerford Logistics, enhances customer service quality.

A Passion for the Industry

“I often say that I’ve never felt like I worked a day in my life, despite 40 years in this industry and at J&M,” remarked Harold Sumerford Jr., the CEO. “I take immense pride in our company’s achievements. We’ve built our reputation on excellence and intend to maintain that standard as we continue to grow.”
