MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — An increasing number of young adults are pursuing careers in truck driving due to a driver shortage in the industry, which offers starting salaries ranging from $60,000 to $70,000.
Many young people, particularly Gen Z, are now considering truck driving as a viable career option. The retirement of older drivers has created a significant gap, prompting new entrants into the field. Aspiring drivers cite financial stability and travel opportunities as major incentives.

As companies grapple with a lack of drivers, young adults are discovering promising job prospects in trucking.
After completing four years in the Marine Corps, 23-year-old Alexis Gonzales decided to obtain his CDL license. “I was contemplating going to school, but I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me, so I chose this path, and it’s been the best decision,” stated Gonzales.
He is part of a growing trend, with more Gen Z individuals enrolling in the four-week course at ACE Driving Academy. Easi Equivel expressed a desire to see new places, noting, “Where I come from, not many people get to drive and explore the world.”
Industry expert Roy Burke highlighted that the influx of new drivers is crucial to counter the declining workforce, as older drivers retire. “The industry is aging, and we urgently need younger individuals to step in to fill those gaps,” he remarked.
With a surge in interest, the driving academy has increased from one student monthly during the pandemic to about 8-10 students every two weeks. Burke noted, “I believe other driving schools are experiencing similar growth.” Equivel candidly mentioned his motivation: “Of course, the financial aspect; I work in a warehouse and hear truck drivers enjoy financial freedom.”
New drivers can earn between $60,000 and $70,000 — a respected job that students believe is vital to keeping the nation’s economy moving. Gonzales emphasized, “Without trucks, nothing operates; if trucks don’t run, grocery stores won’t have products, and what we need won’t be available.”
