Engen’s Commitment to Truck Driver Health in October
As Transport Month unfolds this October, Engen is launching free voluntary health screenings for truck drivers throughout South Africa, reiterating its dedication to the health, safety, and well-being of the nation’s transport workers.
Annual Driver Wellness Campaign Launch
The yearly Engen Driver Wellness campaign will commence on 20 October, providing complimentary health screenings at 29 Engen Truck Stops and select Engen 1-Stops across the country, maintaining the extensive reach of last year’s initiative.
Partnership with Trucking Wellness
This year, Engen collaborates once again with Trucking Wellness, a project of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), to ensure professional health screening and wellness support for drivers at the event.
The Importance of Truck Drivers
“Truck drivers are the unsung heroes of our roads,” says Adnaan Emeran, Engen’s Commercial Marketing and Business Development Manager. “Their extended hours and rigorous schedules make initiatives like this crucial for their health and road safety. Given that 90% of South Africa’s goods are transported by road, Engen is proud to contribute to the well-being of both drivers and the economy.”
Comprehensive Health Checks Offered
During last year’s campaign, over 1,600 health screenings were performed at Engen Truck Stops and selected Engen 1-Stops across eight provinces, marking an increase of over 400 tests from the previous year. This year, drivers can access a variety of health checks, which include screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, malaria, TB, STIs, HIV/AIDS, and BMI. Participants will also receive a complimentary tote bag from Engen as a gesture of appreciation.
Ongoing Health Support
According to Tertius Wessels, Managing Director of Trucking Wellness, maintaining the health of truck drivers is essential for the transport industry’s sustainability. “Truck drivers often face unique health challenges due to long periods away from home. By bringing wellness services directly to where they operate, we can ensure early detection, encourage healthier lifestyles, and improve road safety in South Africa,” Wessels emphasizes.
Permanence of Support through Clinics
Beyond Transport Month, truck drivers can continue to receive professional medical care at six permanent Trucking Wellness clinics situated at key Engen Truck Stop locations. Engen has a longstanding relationship with the transport sector, recognizing its vital role in driving South Africa’s economy and proudly supporting the individuals who keep the country supplied and connected.
