Engen’s Driver Wellness Campaign Supports Truck Drivers
As Transport Month concludes, Engen’s annual Driver Wellness initiative has once more provided essential healthcare services to South Africa’s truck drivers, the vital contributors to the economy’s movement.
Over a Decade of Impact
For more than ten years, Engen Driver Wellness has significantly enhanced the health and safety of the road freight sector, empowering truck drivers to prioritize their well-being amidst the demands of their long hours on the road.
Health Screenings Offered Nationwide
In collaboration with Trucking Wellness, a project of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), this year’s campaign provided free health screenings at 29 Engen Truck Stops and 1-Stops across the country, reaching drivers in eight provinces from October 20 to November 13, 2025.
Comprehensive Health Assessments
This year saw a total of 1,503 screenings, where drivers underwent thorough health assessments, including tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, malaria, TB, STIs, HIV/AIDS, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Each participant also received a complimentary Engen tog bag as a token of appreciation.
Importance of Preventative Healthcare
More than just numbers, the campaign highlighted the significance of preventative care and early detection. For many drivers, these screenings offered a rare opportunity to consult with healthcare professionals amidst their demanding routines.
Health Insights from 2025
Key findings from this year’s campaign include:
- 53.6% had abnormal results requiring further attention
- 9.9% exhibited signs of high or abnormal blood pressure
- 28.9% had elevated cholesterol or blood sugar levels, with 18.1% showing high cholesterol and 10.8% having high blood sugar.
Commitment to Truck Driver Health
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the health of South Africa’s transport workers, stating, “Truck drivers are crucial for our economic growth. Through this initiative, we emphasize their health and safety as a national concern—healthy drivers contribute to safer roads and supply chains.”
Ongoing Support Through Clinics
Beyond the mobile health campaign, Engen and Trucking Wellness maintain six Trucking Wellness clinics at strategic Engen Truck Stops, providing drivers continuous access to healthcare services even after Transport Month concludes. Tertius Wessels, Project Manager of Trucking Wellness, acknowledged Engen’s lasting commitment to driver health, stating, “Our partnership allows us to reach drivers wherever they are, fostering early diagnosis and safer roadways.” With 90% of the nation’s goods transported by road, initiatives like Engen Driver Wellness are crucial for ensuring that both drivers and the economy remain #AlwaysMoving.
