Collins Blames Newsom for Floridian Deaths
On Thursday, Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins accused California Gov. Gavin Newsom of being responsible for the deaths of three Floridians. This tragedy allegedly occurred when an illegal immigrant truck driver, who received a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in California, made an illegal U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike and collided with a van.
Collins Calls Out Newsom
During his trip to California, Collins stated, “This isn’t business as usual,” as he prepared to return to Tallahassee accompanied by Indian national Harjinder Singh. He attributed systemic issues related to illegal immigration to Newsom’s policies, which he claimed enabled Singh’s reckless driving that led to the crash in St. Lucie County on August 12.
Urgent Plea for Change
Collins expressed his sorrow, stating, “We’re here today because of tragedy. Three Floridians’ lives ended early due to Gavin Newsom’s and California’s failed policies.” He voiced frustration over the impact of such policies, demanding to know how many more lives must be lost because of the situation.
Allegations Against Singh
Collins highlighted that Singh, who crossed the border illegally and obtained his CDL in California, only managed to correctly answer three out of 16 questions during a subsequent interrogation by the Florida Highway Patrol. He emphasized, “That thug fled back here because he knew these policies would defend him.”
Newsom Responds on Social Media
In response, Newsom’s press office took to social media, alleging that Florida allowed a murder suspect to escape justice while California police intervened. They criticized Collins for staging a photo opportunity rather than addressing the real issue.
Collins Stands Firm
Collins, referred to by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as “The Chuck Norris of Florida Politics,” shared that he doesn’t fit the typical political mold. He highlighted his commitment as a retired Green Beret and emphasized that visiting California was outside his comfort zone but crucial for his mission.
Leadership Critique
Collins criticized Newsom’s approach to leadership, stating that real leadership involves confronting difficult truths rather than seeking media attention. He concluded his statements by acknowledging that California may not readily welcome a Florida Republican’s perspective.
