OBrienco Transport: A Father-Son Partnership
In South Toowoomba, John O’Brien, Managing Director of OBrienco Transport, collaborates closely with his son, Jack O’Brien, who serves as the National Sales and Linehaul Manager.
A Life in Transport
John states, “Having spent my entire working life in the transport sector, I’ve faced numerous challenges, but I hope my role as a father is what defines me most.” He appreciates Jack’s enthusiasm for the industry and his ambition to enhance their business through relationship-building.
Complementary Skills
John highlights that he and Jack possess distinct skill sets. “Frequently, the student takes on the role of the teacher, which I wholeheartedly welcome. It would be naive of me to believe that I possess all the knowledge,” he remarked.
Early Beginnings
John entered the transport industry at the age of 19 after acquiring his first rigid vehicle and credits several positive role models for guiding him along the way.
A Shared Passion
Jack’s enthusiasm for the transport field began at a young age, as he assisted his father in the family business. He reminisced, “I still experience the same thrill for trucks that I had as a child when Dad would drive us in his new Kenworth.”
Father’s Day Reflections
On Father’s Day, Jack expressed pride in working alongside his father and sharing their passion for trucks with his son, Samuel. Meanwhile, Paul Salvati, Chief Operations Officer of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), emphasized the vital role drivers play in the transport industry, especially as many are away from their families on this occasion.
Prioritizing Well-Being
Salvati noted that most heavy vehicle drivers are men, who often delay seeking medical help until symptoms worsen. He encouraged drivers to prioritize their mental and physical health and set a positive example for their children and future generations, particularly considering the projected 77% increase in road freight volume by 2050.
