Aurora Innovation Stock Surge Following Nvidia Partnership
Aurora Innovation (AUR) shares jumped by 29% on Tuesday after the company announced a collaboration with AI chip leader Nvidia (NVDA) to implement large-scale self-driving truck operations.
About Aurora and Its Technology
Aurora specializes in AI-driven autonomous driving systems for self-driving trucks, such as 18-wheelers. The physical components for these systems are produced by automotive supplier Continental, which intends to begin mass production of Aurora’s technology in 2027.
Nvidia’s Involvement
During a keynote speech at the CES trade show, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed that Aurora and Continental will utilize Nvidia’s advanced DRIVE Thor autonomous vehicle chip. This chip employs Nvidia’s latest Blackwell architecture and is purpose-built to handle high-demand data tasks within the transportation sector.
Industry Perspective
Huang emphasized that “the autonomous vehicle revolution is here,” adding that the DRIVE Thor chips have entered full production as of late Monday.
Company Background
Aurora went public in 2021 via a merger with a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) co-led by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, with the merger valuing the company at $13 billion. While shares peaked above $13 in late 2021, they faced significant declines alongside the downturn in the autonomous vehicle sector, although Aurora’s stock has seen a remarkable increase of over 150% in the past year.
Current Testing and Future Goals
The company is actively testing about 30 autonomous trucks in Texas, under the supervision of human drivers. Originally, Aurora aimed to launch 20 fully self-driving trucks by the end of 2024, but this plan has been adjusted, and now the company is targeting “at least 10” trucks for April 2025, as it continues to meet its internal safety benchmarks.
Regulatory Compliance
Aurora has reportedly met the self-driving vehicle standards established by Texas regulations. A company spokesperson clarified, “There’s a misconception that Texas is the Wild West. We collaborate closely with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Department of Public Safety to ensure our alignment in deploying self-driving technology.” This relationship has proven beneficial in advancing their goals in Texas.
