Jason Isbell Rejoins Drive-By Truckers for Special Performance

For one night, Jason Isbell returned to his roots as a member of the Drive-By Truckers. Isbell originally joined the band in 2001 but ventured into a solo career in 2007. Since then, he and the Drive-By Truckers have maintained a strong bond, occasionally reuniting for special performances. Recently, after 18 years, they announced their first performance together on television.

Recent Collaboration on TV

The Drive-By Truckers have just released a four-LP box set of their acclaimed 2003 album, Decoration Day. Knowing that Jason Isbell would be joining them for a performance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show excited fans. This event took place on a Tuesday night and created high expectations for what song they might perform.

Song Choice: A Surprising Yet Fitting Selection

Many anticipated that Isbell would sing one of his two tracks from Decoration Day, namely “Outfit” or the title track, both of which he continues to perform in his solo shows. Contrary to expectations, the band chose to play “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy,” a standout piece by longtime co-leader Patterson Hood.

The Significance of the Song

In retrospect, this decision made perfect sense. “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy” captures the essence of life on the road, expressing sentiments of homesickness while persevering in a demanding lifestyle. This has been a shared experience for everyone involved in the Colbert performance since before the release of Decoration Day.

Isbell’s Role and Performance Highlights

While Isbell has frequently appeared on television in recent years, the Drive-By Truckers have had fewer opportunities, making this performance all the more special. It was refreshing to see Isbell in a supporting role, contributing guitar and backing vocals, though he did manage to showcase his talent with a striking solo during the performance.

Available Now: The Definitive Decoration Day

The newly released The Definitive Decoration Day is now available through New West Records, making it a perfect time for fans to revisit the band’s legendary music.
