Truck Drivers Urged to Combat Ebola Spread

The Uganda Drivers Association is urging long-haul transporters to actively participate in efforts to curb the spread of Ebola. They emphasize that the frequent cross-border travels of drivers not only heighten their risk of infection but also position them as potential transmitters of the virus between communities.

In a recent statement, the association called on all truck drivers and transport operators to minimize unnecessary physical contact, practice effective hand hygiene, stay vigilant for unusual health symptoms, and promptly report any suspected cases to health officials.

“A healthy driver signifies a safer journey, safeguarding families, securing businesses, and ensuring safer communities across borders,” the association stated.

Truck drivers frequently traverse border crossings, fuel stations, loading centers, markets, and various communities during their duties, which health authorities recognize as a significant risk factor for the spread of infectious diseases.

The association cautioned drivers against sharing or acting on unverified information. Instead, they urged reliance solely on official health updates provided by government authorities.

Individuals experiencing symptoms associated with Ebola, such as high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained bleeding, or severe weakness, are encouraged to seek immediate medical assistance and notify health officials without hesitation.

Members of the public and drivers can contact the Ministry of Health’s toll-free hotline at 0800 100 066 or send a free SMS to Ureport at 8500 for assistance related to Ebola or to report any suspected symptoms.

Uganda has a history of multiple Ebola outbreaks, with the most recent in 2022 involving the Sudan strain, which resulted in over 55 fatalities before being declared contained in January 2023.
