Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Initiatives for Vision Health
Shahpura, Jaipur: 14.02.2025 – Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company Ltd (Chola), a premier financial services entity, reaffirms its dedication to road safety and community welfare through the Raahi National Truck Eye Health and Rural Eye Health initiatives. In partnership with Sight Savers, India, these programs aim to enhance the vision health of commercial vehicle personnel, thereby lowering accident rates and improving the lifestyle of India’s trucking workforce.
Raahi National Truck Eye Health Program Overview
The Raahi National Truck Eye Health Program, initiated in 2015 as a pilot, was tailored to confront the pressing issue of vision impairment among truck drivers. Recognizing that poor eyesight significantly contributes to road accidents, the program offers crucial eye screenings, corrective measures for refractive errors, and cataract surgeries for truck drivers and commercial vehicle crew members. It has since broadened its outreach across various locations along India’s highways, especially the Golden Quadrilateral and North-South-East-West corridors.
Expansion in Shahpura, Rajasthan
The alliance with Sight Savers, which runs 23 vision centers across the nation, has now extended to Shahpura, a vital trucking center near Jaipur with substantial truck activity. This program will deliver comprehensive eye care services, including eye screenings, spectacles distribution, cataract surgeries, and counseling aimed at fostering long-term awareness of eye health among truck drivers.
Achievements in Vision Health
During the fiscal year 2024-25, the initiative successfully screened over 150,000 truck drivers for vision problems, distributing 65,000 pairs of spectacles to those in need. These efforts are aimed at not only enhancing road safety but also improving the overall well-being of the community, with expectations of positively impacting more than 225,000 individuals.
Rural Eye Health Program Initiatives
The Rural Eye Health Program aims to combat preventable blindness in areas with disturbingly high visual impairment rates. This collaborative effort seeks to enhance eye health service accessibility, affordability, and efficacy, which will improve the quality of life for countless individuals.
Impact on Local Communities
This collaboration with Sight Savers has yielded significant results, with 9,000 individuals screened and 1,800 cataract surgeries performed. In Sirohi, the program reached over 15,200 individuals with screenings and completed nearly 2,000 cataract surgeries.
Commitment to Community Welfare
Mr. Ravindra Kumar Kundu, Managing Director & CEO of Cholamandalam Investment and Finance, stated, “Our partnership with Sight Savers in the Raahi National Truck Eye Health and Rural Eye Health initiatives demonstrates Chola’s steadfast commitment to effecting meaningful change in underserved communities. Our objective is to guarantee that the trucking community in India receives vital eye care, thereby reducing accident risks and promoting overall health.” He added that expanding services to Shahpura exemplifies their commitment to making eye health care more accessible. This program also emphasizes the importance of eye health awareness, motivating truck drivers to seek timely intervention for vision-related concerns.
Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company Ltd continues to prioritize the well-being of individuals, particularly truck drivers, who are integral to India’s economy and transportation infrastructure. The Rural Eye Health Program builds on the success of similar initiatives in other regions and signals an expansion into Assam and Rajasthan, accurately reflecting Cholamandalam’s and Sight Savers’ shared vision of inclusive healthcare access for all.
