Saskatchewan Trucking Association Calls for Review of Reporting Practices

The Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) is advising trucking companies to reassess their reporting methods following the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) decision to reinstate penalties related to specific T4A information slip requirements in the trucking industry.

Changes in Penalty Regulations

According to a recent statement, the CRA has ended a long-term halt on penalties for failing to report service fees paid to Canadian-controlled private corporations within the trucking sector. This new regulation will take effect during the 2025 tax year, with submissions expected by early 2026.

New Reporting Requirements

With the revised rules, trucking firms that pay over $500 in a calendar year to a Canadian-controlled private corporation for services must disclose these payments on a T4A slip, specifically using box 048.

Definition of the Industry

The STA noted that businesses generating more than 50% of their income from trucking activities are classified as part of the industry concerning this reporting mandate.

Deadline for T4A Submissions

Recipients must receive T4A slips and those must be filed with the CRA along with a T4A summary by February 28, 2026. Since this date falls on a weekend, the effective deadline shifts to March 2, 2026.

CRA’s Objective

The CRA’s reporting adjustments aim to enhance transparency, tackle tax non-compliance, and ensure fair competition within the trucking industry. “The Saskatchewan Trucking Association supports initiatives that promote fairness and compliance in our sector,” stated executive director Susan Ewart. She added that these updated reporting requirements reflect ongoing concerns regarding driver classification and equitable tax practices.

Advice for Trucking Operators

Ewart acknowledged the challenges carriers may face in keeping up with regulatory updates but emphasized that compliance is crucial for maintaining a fair marketplace and guaranteeing that workers receive necessary benefits and protections. The STA encourages trucking operators to promptly review their payroll and contractor reporting systems and to consult tax professionals or the CRA to ensure alignment with the new requirements.
