Enhanced Safety Initiatives by MVA Fund
The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund is amplifying its initiatives aimed at reducing road fatalities by focusing on the health and welfare of truck drivers through its Truckers’ Wellness Campaign.
Proactive Strategy for Road Safety
In a media statement released on Wednesday, the fund indicated that this initiative is part of a wider strategy to transition from reactive support for accident survivors to proactive, human-centered interventions designed to prevent accidents.
Collaboration for Comprehensive Health Management
In collaboration with the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and the police’s traffic enforcement team, the campaign provides on-site health checks, road safety training, and compliance awareness to drivers at key transport routes and checkpoints.
Addressing Driver Health Challenges
Truck drivers frequently encounter long hours, fatigue, and various health issues that can impair their alertness and decision-making skills. The MVA Fund emphasizes that tackling these challenges is vital for enhancing road safety.
Rising Traffic Volumes and Health Risks
According to an assessment by traffic police, roughly 750 trucks leave Walvis Bay each day, underscoring the heightened traffic flow and the necessity for tailored interventions. Past health screenings have identified common risks such as hypertension and weight problems, which can lead to fatigue and diminished focus while driving.
Proactive Engagement with Drivers
“By proactively identifying these risks and directly involving drivers, the fund aims to prevent accidents before they happen while fostering a culture of responsibility and self-care on the road,” the statement reads.
Upcoming Wellness Campaign Events
The initiative builds on previous events held in Swakopmund and Windhoek in December 2025, where approximately 121 truck drivers were screened. The campaign is currently taking place at a major traffic checkpoint in Rundu from March 23 to 24, with the next event set for Gobabis from March 26 to 27. Mobile and fixed wellness clinics run by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group offer health screenings, while the MVA Fund and its partners promote safe driving practices, fatigue management, and adherence to traffic laws. Activations will run between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, with a goal to screen at least 100 truck drivers during this segment.
