This latest round of DOT grants is specifically aimed at training veterans and their spouses for careers in the trucking sector. The U.S. has increasingly faced a shortage of truck drivers in recent years.
To address this shortage, the DOT is allocating millions of dollars to educational institutions to equip veterans with skills for the trucking profession. This initiative aims to increase the number of commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders by providing advanced operator safety training and expanding employment opportunities for veterans, their spouses, and individuals from underrepresented communities.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “Veterans know how to get things where they need to go safely. At a time when our supply chain depends on having more qualified truck drivers, this program will give those who have served in uniform a new and important way to contribute, and benefit, by launching a new career in this vital industry.”
