Rubio Halts Worker Visa Issuance for Truck Drivers

On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the immediate suspension of worker visa approvals for commercial drivers, following a tragic incident in Florida where an illegal immigrant truck driver was reportedly responsible for a crash that resulted in three fatalities.

Public Safety Cited

Rubio emphasized that the decision was made with public safety in mind. He expressed concern over the growing number of foreign drivers operating large trucks in the U.S., stating, “This situation endangers American lives and undermines the livelihoods of American truckers.”

Details of the Incident

The issue gained attention after Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old undocumented immigrant, drove a commercial truck on the Florida Turnpike and allegedly attempted an unauthorized U-turn, causing the trailer to jackknife and collide with a minivan. This resulted in the deaths of all three passengers in the minivan, according to authorities.

Questions About Singh’s License

Following the incident, it was revealed that Singh had not passed the necessary English and driving tests before receiving his commercial driver’s license. He was issued a full-term commercial license in Washington in July 2023, despite being ineligible and had also obtained a limited-term license in California in 2024.

Political Tensions

California Governor Gavin Newsom and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials have engaged in a heated exchange regarding Singh’s licensing. Newsom’s office noted that Singh had received a work permit during the Trump administration, prompting a strong response from DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, who clarified that Singh was denied a license in September 2020 but was granted one in June 2021 under the Biden administration.

Extradition and Charges

Harjinder Singh has been extradited to Florida from California, where he now faces three counts of vehicular homicide related to the fatal crash.

Summary

In light of recent events, Rubio’s decision to pause the issuance of truck driver visas aims to address public safety concerns while further investigations regarding Singh’s licensing and immigration status continue amidst ongoing political debates.
