Impact of Rising Fuel Prices on Trucking Industry

According to industry associations, the surge in fuel prices may threaten the survival of some trucking businesses.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, resulting in volatile oil prices. Recently, the price of oil has climbed above $100 per barrel.

This rise in oil prices is likely to lead to an increase in the cost of goods, especially since over 90 percent of freight in Aotearoa is transported by road.

The New Zealand Trucking Association reports that fuel costs have now surpassed labor costs as the leading expense for trucking firms, with fuel expenses now comprising 30 percent of total operating costs—up approximately 8 to 10 percent compared to the period before the Middle Eastern conflict.

David Boyce, CEO of the NZ Trucking Association, expressed concern over the rising fuel costs. “It’s quite challenging out there… For some businesses, this may be the tipping point,” he noted. However, he believes the industry has resilience, with many operators hoping that this situation is a temporary setback.

Boyce mentioned the “wild fluctuations” in fuel prices, highlighting a recent 35 percent increase in diesel costs within the week. He emphasized that transport operators often have slim profit margins and will need to pass these increased costs directly to consumers without delay.

Despite the challenges, Boyce assured that diesel supply levels are sufficient, citing about 25 days of current diesel supply in New Zealand, along with another 29 days en route. “If the incoming supply remains uninterrupted, we should be fine. However, any unforeseen disruptions could alter this situation rapidly.”

In a related effort, the Commerce Commission is increasing its monitoring of fuel prices and will take action against any unjustified price hikes. Commissioner Bryan Chappel urged consumers to utilize tools like the Gaspy app to compare fuel prices and stay informed.
