Health Initiatives for Truck Drivers

Transportation carriers, industry groups, and truck stops are launching efforts to assist truck drivers in improving their health. Employers are organizing health seminars, creating on-site fitness facilities, hiring nutritionists and fitness trainers, and providing financial rewards to employees who quit smoking or manage their weight.

Some drivers are taking proactive steps by cooking in their trucks, participating in walks or bike rides at truck stops, sharing their journeys on blogs such as truckingsolutionsgroup.org and safetythruwellness.com, and even publishing books.

Introduction of New Programs

Lindora Clinic, known for its weight-loss centers, launched the “Lean for Life On-the-Road” program specifically for truckers last year. Collaborating with the Truckload Carriers Association, which represents 400 carriers, they are set to initiate a “Trucker Weight Loss Showdown” in January. This competition will last two and a half months, involving 10 fleets, each with six drivers and six office staff, who will adopt low-carb, low-fat, moderate-protein diets and exercise regularly.

StayFit Program by TravelCenters

This year, TravelCenters of America/Petro introduced the StayFit initiative, which includes fitness facilities, designated walking routes, and healthier dining options at its locations. Furthermore, Snap Fitness, a global chain with 24-hour gym access, plans to establish fitness centers in some of the 550 Pilot Flying J Travel Centers nationwide.

Economic Motivations Behind Wellness Programs

While the drive for healthier truckers plays a significant role in these wellness initiatives, economic factors are also contributing. The trucking industry faces escalating insurance premiums and medical expenses. According to the 2010 Cottingham and Butler Trucking Compensation and Benefits Benchmark Survey, the out-of-pocket costs for truck drivers and their employers can be 40 to 70 percent higher compared to other sectors.

Company Efforts to Reduce Health Costs

“It keeps escalating, and it’s hard to find a solution,” remarked Sidney Brown, CEO of NFI, a logistics firm located in Cherry Hill, N.J. To mitigate costs, his company has launched quarterly wellness newsletters, provided complimentary smoking cessation workshops, and offered discounts for services like WeightWatchers and Anytime Fitness. They also host a company-wide “Biggest Loser” contest.
