Painesville firefighters shut down a section of Bank Street to manage a hydraulic fluid leak that occurred when equipment fell from an overturned semi-truck.

CLEVELAND — The Painesville fire department responded to a hydraulic fluid leak after a semi-truck transporting heavy machinery overturned on Wednesday afternoon.

As per a Facebook update from Painesville Fire Chief Thomas Hummel, Jr., dispatchers received reports of the overturned truck on Bank Street near the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing at approximately 12:20 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an off-road lift lying in the roadway that had fallen off the semi-truck.

The fire department reported that the lift was “actively leaking hydraulic fluid,” prompting first responders to close Bank Street between East Walnut Avenue and South State Street. Fire personnel, alongside police and the Painesville Public Works Department, worked to manage the leak.

Due to the spill exceeding a “reportable quantity” of fluid, authorities from the Lake County General Health District and the Ohio EPA were informed.

The fire department stated, “No immediate response from these agencies was necessary, and there was no risk of oil contaminating the sewers or waterways.”

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries related to the incident.
