Surge in Sales for Trucker Jacket Following UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder
A green trucker jacket, reminiscent of the one allegedly worn by Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has reportedly seen a spike in sales due to the online buzz surrounding its style.
As reported by Complex, the sherpa-lined, hooded Levi’s jacket priced at $225 has been selling out rapidly after a user on Reddit speculated that it resembled the coat worn by Mangione during the crime.
CCTV footage from the day of Thompson’s murder in Midtown shows the gunman clad in a green hooded jacket that closely resembles the now-famous Levi’s design.
In just 48 hours, more than 700 units of the “Sherpa Lined Two Pocket Hooded Trucker Jacket” were sold, based on sales data from Macy’s. On Tuesday, the jacket was marked as “unavailable,” according to GQ, but it was back in stock the following morning for $80.
Macy’s competitors also reported high demand; at Kohl’s, the jacket was labeled as “going fast,” with over 3,000 recent purchases. A similar style was also available on Amazon for the same price.
Reddit users quickly dubbed the jacket “killer fashion,” enthusiastically adding it to their shopping carts despite some skepticism about its authenticity. One user humorously remarked that it could serve as a Halloween costume since it’s “close enough.”
Mangione was apprehended this week after being recognized at a McDonald’s, leading to his arrest on murder charges. He was discovered with a fake ID, a ghost gun, and a manifesto.
