A Heartfelt Goodbye
As Satoyu hugged his tearful wife Yomeyu, he held her tightly before stepping back.
Embracing Fame
With tears in his eyes, he put on his signature sharp-edged sunglasses and displayed his trademark villainous grin while engaging with the fans at their meet-and-greet during the Singapore Comic Con (SGCC) at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on December 7.
From Truck Driver to TikTok Star
Despite his current TikTok following of over 8.3 million, the 30-year-old Japanese national started from humble beginnings as a truck driver, a fact he shared in an interview with AsiaOne at the SGCC TikTok booth. “I was a truck driver before. Honestly, it was a lot of hard work,” he explained through a translator.
Driving to Content Creation
Just three years prior, Satoyu was driving a 12-meter truck in Japan, often on unpredictable schedules. His role involved transporting steel materials, with some shifts starting as early as 2 AM. “I don’t think I could drive such a big truck again; I’d be scared,” he noted, reflecting on his past job.
No Regrets
When speaking about his transition to content creation, Satoyu emphasized the support he received from friends and family, particularly his parents, who had taken pride in his new path. When asked if he regretted leaving his previous career, he asserted, “I’m very satisfied where I am now, and I’m focused on the future.”
Finding His Niche
Initially, Satoyu experimented with various types of content and drew inspiration from his love for villains. After first dabbling in social media, where he recorded himself eating curry, he eventually discovered the character Doflamingo from One Piece, a flamboyant antagonist. His impressive rendition of Doflamingo has since attracted millions of views on TikTok.
Sharing the Joy
As the interview concluded, a line of fans began to form, eager to meet Satoyu. Yomeyu, visibly emotional, returned from behind the booth with red eyes, deeply touched by the response from fans. The translator explained, “Back in Japan, they aren’t as popular, so they were very surprised and emotional to see so many people gather today.” With emotions in check, Satoyu prepared to engage with his enthusiastic fans.
