David Perdue’s Campaign Narrative

Senator David Perdue’s inaugural campaign video from 2014 portrayed a story that resonated with many Georgians: a tale of a modest boy from rural America whose relentless dedication propelled him into a successful international business career, exploring free markets and distant places, while amassing knowledge and wealth.

The Global Commerce Influence in Georgia

The appreciation for global trade has become a key aspect of contemporary Georgia, exemplified by the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, analyzed by author Tom Wolfe, and supported by figures like Mr. Perdue’s cousin, Sonny Perdue, who served as governor from 2003 to 2011. In his first political campaign three years later, David Perdue highlighted his global business expertise as a consultant and executive during a speech to Republicans in Bibb County, near his hometown in central Georgia.

Highlighting International Experience

“There’s only one candidate in this race that’s ever lived outside the United States,” Mr. Perdue remarked. “How can you bring value to a debate about the economy unless you have any understanding about the free-enterprise system and what it takes to compete in the global economy?”

Current Political Climate

As he approaches one of the crucial runoff elections on January 5 in Georgia that could shift Senate control, Mr. Perdue has maintained that his background in global business remains central to his campaign identity. However, this focus has revealed contradictions in his career, character, party alignment, and regional influence, particularly as he adopts the populist, America-first themes associated with Trumpism.

Contradictions in Business Credentials

The man who has recently backed President Trump’s notable tariffs has had a career marked by a staunch advocacy for free trade, which includes outsourcing initiatives. As a high-ranking executive at companies like Reebok, Sara Lee, and Dollar General, he played a significant role in relocating manufacturing and jobs to low-wage facilities in China and other Asian nations.

Successes and Setbacks in His Career

An examination of Perdue’s business history reveals a record of notable achievements, earning millions while navigating complex corporate developments and fostering domestic employment, especially at Dollar General. Nonetheless, his journey includes setbacks, such as a failed trucking venture with Sonny Perdue and his unsuccessful attempt to revitalize Pillowtex, which deeply affected a North Carolina community. Despite frequently claiming to have spearheaded “the Reebok turnaround” as president of its main brand in the early 2000s, he left the company after a competitor was appointed above him who now questions his role in that turnaround.
