Will Beeley: From Music to Trucking and Back Again
After releasing a few albums in the 1970s, songwriter Will Beeley stepped away from music to become a long-haul trucker, which he did to support his family. Recently, he spoke with Scott Simon about his return to the music scene with a new album titled Highways & Heart Attacks.
A Journey Through Music and Trucking
Will Beeley, known for his reflective songs, took a hiatus from his guitar and turned to trucking to provide for his family. Despite the passage of four decades, he felt compelled to return to the studio and record new material, leading to his latest album, Highways And Heart Attacks.
Life on the Road
Currently parked in Austin, Texas, Beeley took a moment to chat with NPR’s Scott Simon during his travels. He shared insights about his trucking life, discussing the various cryogenic materials he transports, such as liquid helium and natural gas.
Musical Roots and Challenges
Reflecting on his origins, Beeley grew up in San Antonio and began his music career there. His initial success was under a contract with Malaco, but after his first album didn’t take off, he needed to find a “real” job as his family grew. A songwriting contract ended in the late ’80s, leaving him feeling discouraged and ready to put his music aside.
Inspired to Record Again
Years later, he expressed to his wife a desire to record music again as a sort of bucket-list item. A call from Josh Rosenthal of Tompkins Square rekindled his interest in making new music, despite Beeley feeling insecure about his vocal abilities.
Addressing Social Issues Through Song
One notable track from the album, “The Homeless Ain’t Just Hobos Anymore,” draws attention to the plight of families living in poverty. Beeley shared how witnessing a family living under a bridge in San Antonio affected him deeply, leading to the song’s poignant lyrics about homelessness.
Looking Ahead
Aging into his 70s, Beeley plans to retire from trucking soon, aspiring to focus solely on writing music. He remains passionate about storytelling through his songs and is eager to create more, highlighting the complex narratives of life.
Will Beeley’s new album, Highways And Heart Attacks, marks a significant return to music after a long interlude. He continues to share his journey, blending experiences from his life as a trucker with his artistry.
