IVCC’s Truck Driver Training Program Celebrates 25 Years
Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) is marking the 25th anniversary of its Truck Driver Training Program with an open house, featuring newly installed driving simulators, the main campus headquarters, and its truck fleet.
Event Details
The open house is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the training facility located on the Oglesby campus.
Significance of the Milestone
Rebecca Zamora, the dean of workforce development career and technical programs, expressed excitement about this milestone. “This reflects the hard work of our instructors, staff, and students, highlighting the essential role of professional drivers in our communities and the economy,” she noted.
Program Achievements
Since its inception on April 24, 2000, the program has graduated 2,025 students. Many of these graduates are honored on a Wall of Honor in the classroom, with some families passing down the tradition to their children.
New Training Simulators
Program Coordinator Tom Nestler stated that the newly acquired simulators, funded by a $300,000 grant from the Illinois Community College Board’s Taking Back the Trades program, will greatly enhance training capabilities. They will be utilized not only for driver training but also for youth programs, such as IVCC’s summer career camps.
Benefits of Simulation Training
The simulators provide trainees the opportunity to practice skills like shifting and backing, while exposing them to various driving scenarios without the risks associated with real-world driving. These tools simulate intricate road conditions, such as traffic jams and adverse weather, crucial for developing comprehensive driving skills.
Future Prospects and Enrollment
The training program accommodates 120 students annually in four- to six-week sessions. As enrollment continues to rise, Nestler hopes to expand both the fleet and the number of instructors over the coming years, ensuring that students receive ample drive time and personalized instruction.
