Bot Auto Secures Comprehensive Insurance for Driverless Fleet
Bot Auto, an autonomous trucking and Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) provider, announced on Wednesday that it has established a comprehensive insurance program for its fleet of driverless trucks. This program is designed to scale as the company increases its deployment of autonomous vehicles. Unlike traditional trucking fleets that operate with human drivers, insurance for autonomous trucks necessitates new standards for transparency, insurability, and operational accountability.
Collaboration with Marsh
To achieve this, Bot Auto partnered with Marsh, an A-rated insurance company recognized globally in insurance brokerage and risk management. The tailored insurance plan offers Bot Auto coverage for auto liability, property, general liability, cargo, and inland marine, in addition to a separate cyber policy, according to their announcement.
Distinct Risk Profiles for Autonomous Operations
The operational model of autonomous fleets requires a markedly different risk profile from that of traditional trucking businesses. Current trucking operations face increasing legal, financial, and reputational risks, while autonomous trucking companies can provide enhanced data transparency, owing to their trucks’ extensive array of cameras, radar, lidar, and other sensors.
Safety as a Core Foundation
“Safety isn’t just an add-on; it’s the foundation of our operations,” stated Brian Moore, Bot Auto’s chief policy officer. “Our autonomous trucks are designed to act predictably, function within stringent parameters, and meticulously log all activities. This capability enables us to respond more rapidly, clarify outcomes, and continuously enhance our systems.”
Revolutionizing Risk Management
This level of transparency marks a significant transformation in risk management. Issues that previously led to contentious legal disputes—such as what transpired right before an accident, driver distractions, or the influence of fatigue—can now be conclusively addressed through verifiable data. Risk is now something quantifiable, traceable, and actively overseen.
Operating in Texas
With its insurance now established, Bot Auto is actively running commercial loads daily between Houston and San Antonio, with plans for further lane expansions. This follows the successful completion of driverless operations on public roads in Houston.
Significance for the Industry
“Qualifying for Marsh’s autonomous vehicle insurance program requires a thorough risk mitigation strategy that exceeds standard industry norms,” remarked Owen Oakley, managing director at Marsh. “The establishment of Bot Auto’s insurance program represents another key milestone in the advancement of autonomous trucking in the U.S., highlighting the crucial role of the insurance sector in this evolution.”
