Heartfelt Reunion after Life-Saving Rescue
FARGO — A 79-year-old man from Breckenridge, Minnesota, expressed his gratitude upon meeting the heroes who saved his life after he collapsed while working in Fargo. Harvey Andel, a veteran at the Minn-Dak Beet Piler in Galchutt, North Dakota, was revived thanks to the prompt actions of several truck drivers.
A Life-Changing Encounter
As Andel stood in front of the Sanford AirMed helicopter that transported him to Sanford Hospital on November 22, he marveled, “This is what I rode in?” unaware that he would soon meet the individuals responsible for his recovery.
Thanking His Rescuers
During the gathering, Matt King, one of the rescuers, greeted Andel with a handshake. “Oh my gosh, thank you so much,” a surprised Andel responded. Farmer Matt Granholt and beet truck driver Daniel Nill were also present, allowing Andel to thank them personally for their role in his rescue.
A Brush with Death
On September 25, while working at the beet piler, Andel suffered a cardiac arrest. He recalls being told that he fell forward and then backward, but he doesn’t remember the fall. Granholt noted how their work came to a halt when Andel collapsed, sparking concern among the crew.
Quick Actions Save a Life
Responding swiftly, some of the drivers and farmers sprang into action. King highlighted the urgency when he was called to assist, as others sought out individuals trained in CPR. Together, they performed CPR and used a defibrillator to revive Andel, with a sense of relief when the device did not indicate a need for further shocks.
Celebrating a Second Chance
Finally meeting his rescuers was an important moment for Andel, who expressed his joy at being alive, likening it to winning the lottery. “I got my life back,” he said, emphasizing the significance of their presence during his medical emergency.
A Grateful Spirit
Reflecting on the impact of those who helped him, Andel shared, “If they hadn’t been right there, I would’ve been gone.” With Thanksgiving around the corner, this reunion serves as a heartwarming reminder of community and gratitude. The rescuers also expressed happiness in meeting Andel again, with a sense of relief to see him well after his ordeal.
