Initial Steps to Getting My Authority
In 1999, I resolved to obtain my own authority, but before I took the plunge, I wanted to be thoroughly prepared. I secured funds for a down payment on a truck and trailer, saved enough working capital for at least 30 days, built a customer base, and created a financial backup plan in case of setbacks. With these elements in place, I felt ready and confident to proceed with getting my own authority, which I did without delay.
The Importance of Insurance Preparation
It was only after becoming an insurance agent that I realized I should have started my preparations much earlier, specifically to reduce my insurance premium. That first year in business, my annual premium was as costly as my truck! What led my insurance costs to be so exorbitant during my initial year?
Factors Affecting Insurance Rates
Insurance companies evaluate us based on several criteria. While many, including age, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), driving experience, and years in business, are well-known, there are also lesser-known factors, such as credit scores, business location, severity of MVR items, and prior insurance claims. Recently, our CSA BASIC scores and various additional factors have come into play.
Impact of Address and MVR on Premiums
Insurance companies decide which factors to consider when determining rates. For instance, if your business is based in Oklahoma, they expect your driver’s license to be from the same state. A mismatch—like having a California driver’s license—can lead to a significant increase in your premium. Furthermore, declaring a specific operational radius while presenting an out-of-state license also introduces a mismatch, amplifying the uncertainty that insurance firms prefer to avoid.
The Role of Driving History and Claims
Your MVR plays a crucial role in influencing your insurance rate—both positively and negatively. Typically, insurers look at a five-year MVR report along with your claims history to assess risk. In my experience, labeled as an “outlaw” early on, my MVR reflected multiple speeding violations and previous license suspensions, which greatly impacted my premium.
Strategies for Reducing Premiums
To address a high premium situation, I revised my driving habits and worked diligently to lower my insurance costs over time. My most recent premium was $8K for the same coverage—a substantial decrease. Given today’s strong demand for trucking and favorable rates, those in a similar position have a better opportunity to negotiate lower premiums.
Tips for Future Owners
If you are considering applying for your own authority, here are prioritized strategies to secure the lowest insurance premiums:
• Maintain a clean MVR for the last five years
• Avoid distracted driving and serious violations
• Ensure no insurance claims are present
• Keep your driver’s license and business location in the same state
• Hold your CDL for at least one year, ideally up to five
• Have a good credit score.
