Latest Developments

Canadian truckers involved in the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests are celebrating the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has served nearly ten years in office.

On Monday, two lead organizers from the protest appeared on Fox News, criticizing Trudeau’s governance, particularly his choice to invoke emergency powers during the demonstrations.

Newsweek has contacted Canada’s Liberal Party for a response via an online form.

Importance of the Situation

The trucker protests in 2022 were pivotal in Trudeau’s leadership, as his administration controversially enacted emergency powers to manage the protests against COVID-19 mandates. A Federal Court later deemed this action unconstitutional.

The measures taken, including the freezing of protesters’ bank accounts, received significant backlash from participants and their advocates. Throughout these protests, Trudeau’s public approval ratings fell and did not recover.

Key Information

Following Trudeau’s resignation, Fox News featured Chris Barber and Tamara Lich, co-organizers of the 2022 Freedom Convoy. Both face accusations of criminal activity related to their roles in the protest, with a verdict anticipated in March.

Barber welcomed the resignation, calling it “long overdue” and criticized Trudeau for what he termed “tyrannical mandates,” highlighting the economic issues faced during Trudeau’s tenure. Lich agreed, praising the resignation as a victory and portraying Trudeau as an “ideologically authoritarian politician.”

Repercussions of the Protests

Trudeau’s application of the Emergencies Act during the protests remains contentious. It involved freezing bank accounts, towing trucks, and restricting regulations for crowdfunding platforms aiding the protests. Although Trudeau defended these actions as necessary, they fueled further opposition from convoy supporters.

The protests commenced in early 2022 against vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, evolving into wider dissent against pandemic restrictions, disrupting major trade routes and deepening political rifts, with Trudeau steadfast on the mandates.

Statements from Key Figures

Chris Barber, truck driver and Freedom Convoy leader, shared with Fox News: “We’ve endured the most cruel and tyrannical mandates in the last nine years, including those from Trudeau regarding COVID-19. This is welcome news.”

Tamara Lich remarked: “What we accomplished in Ottawa exposed the true nature of Trudeau as an ideologically authoritarian politician. So, this is a win.”

Trudeau stated during a press conference: “There will be confidence votes in March regarding the supply bill, allowing Parliament to express its confidence in line with democratic principles.”

Next Steps

The Liberal Party will choose a new leader, while opposition factions are expected to initiate a no-confidence vote when Parliament resumes in March. A spring election to select Trudeau’s long-term successor seems likely.
