Investigation into Unsolved Cases Linked to Deceased Convicted Murderer
Officials from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit are actively pursuing leads related to unresolved cases that may involve a now-deceased convicted murderer, who had been implicated in a homicide that occurred in Frederick County in 2006.
Charges Against Garry Artman
In September 2022, Garry Artman, a 64-year-old resident of White Springs, Florida, was charged by Maryland State Police in connection with the murder of Dusty Shuck, a 24-year-old woman found dead near a rest area in Frederick County in 2006. Artman faced multiple charges, including first- and second-degree murder, and first- and second-degree assault, and was awaiting extradition to Maryland for a trial before his passing.
Artman’s Death and Background
Artman died of a terminal illness on December 28, 2023, while serving time in the Michigan Department of Corrections. He was imprisoned for life due to a separate cold case involving the murder of a woman in Michigan in 1996.
Trial and Confession
In September 2023, Artman was convicted on all counts in Kent County, Michigan. Following his sentencing, he was moved to the Michigan Department of Corrections while anticipating extradition to Maryland to face charges for the 2006 murder.
Interviews with Investigators
While receiving medical care at a Michigan hospital in December 2023, Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators interviewed Artman. According to police reports, he confessed to killing Dusty Shuck during this interview.
Claims of Additional Crimes
In subsequent discussions with law enforcement, Artman took responsibility for several other serious offenses but provided minimal details. Because of his transient lifestyle as a truck driver covering extensive routes across the country, law enforcement is seeking information that may connect Artman to other unsolved crimes.
