A motorway service station has stepped up by offering a walk-in clinic for drivers, collaborating with the NHS.
Nurses from Bath and North East Somerset Enhanced Medical Services (BEMS) and the Wiltshire Health Improvement Hub provided blood pressure screenings and health advice at the Chippenham Pit Stop in Wiltshire.
Many truck drivers are on the road for long periods, making it challenging to attend GP appointments and access other medical services.
Driver Insights
Alan Tunmore, a truck driver who works 60-65 hours weekly and has type two diabetes, expressed that getting his blood pressure checked at the truck stop was “reassuring.”
He noted, “It’s a great initiative. Many drivers work 12-15 hours and often don’t get home until late, making it hard to find time for healthcare, especially if feeling unwell.”
Health Services Offered
The community nurses collaborated with Wiltshire Council’s Health Improvement Hub to provide weight management tips and smoking cessation advice to HGV drivers.
According to BEMS nurse Becky Park, “We aim to raise awareness about reducing salt intake and encourage even short bouts of exercise, such as ten minutes near their trucks.”
Importance of Monitoring Health
Park emphasized that many people are unaware of their high blood pressure until it becomes critical, which can lead to severe health complications such as strokes and heart disease.
The Chippenham Pit Stop
The award-winning Chippenham Pit Stop, located off junction 17 of the M4, is an independent family-run truck-stop featuring a café, convenience store, bar, outdoor gym, showers, and parking for overnight stays.
Future Health Sessions
David Hatherell, the truck stop’s owner, highlighted the essential role of truck drivers in the UK economy. The NHS walk-in sessions will resume at Chippenham Pit Stop on May 20, allowing drivers to either book in advance or simply show up.
