Trucking Industry Faces Driver Shortage in 2012 and 2013

The trucking sector is projected to experience a significant driver shortage through 2012 and 2013, with industry estimates indicating a need for approximately 135,000 additional drivers. Despite high unemployment, motor carriers anticipate an increase in job openings as freight transportation demand rises.

Upcoming Job Fair in Denver

To address this growing need, Denver will host a premier trucking job fair accompanied by a free barbecue on Tuesday, June 26. Fourteen leading trucking firms, including Werner, Pride, May, Swift, and Knight, will be present to provide insights to those interested in pursuing a career in trucking. These companies are hiring immediately.

Event Details

The job fair is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SAGE Truck Driving School in Henderson. Bonnie Babcock, the school’s director, states, “If you are currently unemployed, looking to increase your earnings, or seeking a fresh career path, this job fair could be your solution.” Both experienced drivers with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and individuals seeking CDL training are welcome.

Training Opportunities at SAGE

SAGE Truck Driving School offers training for those without prior experience, enabling entry into this rapidly growing, lucrative field. Graduates from SAGE can earn over $40,000 in their first year, with many companies providing bonuses and healthcare among other benefits.

Career Stability and Appeal

The combination of high salary and career growth potential has drawn many individuals to switch to trucking. According to Babcock, “drivers seldom experience layoffs, making trucking one of America’s top middle-class job options.”

Support for Veterans

There is a notable demand for veterans in the industry, and VA benefits may assist with training costs. Babcock notes, “There is significant interest from employers in hiring skilled veterans, and SAGE specializes in aiding former military personnel with job placements.”

SAGE Program Highlights

New drivers at SAGE can take advantage of various benefits including a free CDL pre-trip course, financial aid opportunities, options for Class A or Class B licenses, one-on-one instruction, job placement assistance, evening classes, and industry-leading training standards. Additionally, there are no training contracts tied to any carrier, and CDL testing is provided.
