Efficiency and cost management are crucial in the trucking industry. Modern fleet managers are increasingly utilizing advanced asset tracking and video technologies to enhance their return on investment (ROI). The recent Fleet Technology Trends Report from Verizon Connect highlights how these video solutions are transforming fleet operations by improving fuel efficiency, minimizing asset loss, and bolstering safety.
The Importance of Asset Tracking for ROI
For fleet managers, monitoring high-value assets—including tractors, trailers, and specialized equipment—goes beyond mere convenience; it serves as a significant cost-saving strategy. The expansion of fleets intensifies the challenge of keeping tabs on all equipment.
“As fleets grow larger, the number of assets they manage can be substantial,” said Josh Aroner, Chief Marketing Officer of Verizon Connect. “While it might seem obvious that knowing the location of your equipment is essential, it can become quite complicated when businesses are operating at high speed.”
A key advantage of asset tracking is its role in decreasing the instances of misplaced or underutilized equipment. Fleets that can accurately locate their trailers or assets avoid unnecessary replacement expenses and enhance overall utilization.
“We have observed a noticeable increase in the advantages stemming from cost-effective asset tracking,” Aroner noted. “Fleets are beginning to see the benefits of reduced equipment loss and improved awareness of asset locations, leading to more frequent usage.”
The Impact of Video Solutions on Fleet Operations
Video telematics has experienced a significant uptick in fleet adoption. Initially met with skepticism, video solutions have now become integral for safety and compliance purposes. According to Verizon Connect’s report, 68% of fleets consider in-cab video to be extremely or very beneficial—an impressive change from prior years when drivers were reluctant to have cameras installed.
The driving force behind this transformation? ROI. Video solutions not only enhance driver safety but also assist fleets in managing risk. They can even lead to reductions in costs associated with insurance claims and legal disputes.
“Integrating video technology into telematics has significantly propelled its adoption across the industry,” Aroner explained. “This shift enhances safety for both drivers and vehicles while simultaneously lowering insurance premiums and addressing frivolous lawsuits.”
Cultural Transformation in Fleet Operations
While the advantages of asset tracking and video telematics are evident, effective implementation requires more than just new technology; it necessitates a cultural change within fleet operations.
“Beyond merely a technological shift, our focus is on managing change for our customers,” Aroner commented. “How do you instill safety practices within a business? How can better driver coaching be implemented? Technology alone is insufficient—it’s essential to facilitate organizational change and communicate its benefits to the workforce.”
For fleets investing in these technologies, it’s vital that drivers and staff are well-trained in their use. Even the most advanced technology will not yield a return on investment if it’s not effectively integrated into daily processes.
Harnessing Automation for Regulatory Compliance
Moreover, adhering to changing federal and state regulations is another area where fleet technology is proving its worth.
“If you neglect tracking regulations for a week or two, there’s likely more compliance issues waiting to be addressed,” Aroner pointed out. Verizon Connect is tackling this problem by automating many traditionally manual procedures. He cited Digital Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) and emissions compliance as key examples.
For instance, in California, fleets must adhere to stringent California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations. Verizon Connect has collaborated with this agency to certify its solutions for emissions monitoring, aiming to simplify compliance by integrating reporting and tracking directly into fleet management software, thereby alleviating some of the administrative challenges faced by fleet managers.
