Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Four Powerline Workers in Eden, NC

On April 24, a devastating accident in Eden, North Carolina, resulted in the deaths of four powerline workers and left three individuals injured. The incident occurred when a dump truck collided with an intersection, striking workers who were at the site.

Details of the Incident

The North Carolina Highway Patrol cited the driver of the city-owned dump truck for running a stop sign and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Reports indicate that around 1:30 p.m., the truck crashed into a bucket truck occupied by a worker and subsequently veered into a ditch after hitting six individuals at the intersection of Church Street, Carroll Street, and Park Road.

Ongoing Investigation

The Highway Patrol is actively investigating the incident, and the National Transportation Safety Board announced it would conduct a safety investigation in collaboration with the Highway Patrol.

Identity of the Deceased

Among those who lost their lives were Douglas Garland Sides, 72, of Summerfield; Madison Carter, 32, of Sandy Ridge; William Evans, 35, of Randleman; and Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem. The deceased individuals were engaged in power line repairs at the time of the accident.

Injuries Sustained

Two workers suffered severe injuries and are currently hospitalized, while the occupant of the bucket truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The dump truck driver, aged 66, experienced minor injuries.

Statements from Employers

The company Carolina Power & Signalization, which employed some of the workers, shared their grief on Facebook: “A tragic accident yesterday afternoon claimed the lives of three of our brothers and left three more critically injured. These men were not just coworkers – they were family. They committed their lives to serving others and ensuring the lights stay on.”

Tribute to Victims

Victory Power Lines, employing Douglas Sides, also expressed their sorrow on Facebook, stating: “We are heartbroken at the loss of our dedicated employee, Douglas Sides, who tragically lost his life while performing his beloved work. His passion for this industry greatly impacted our team.”
