RIDDICK BOWE, a former heavyweight boxing champion, once lived a life of luxury, complete with a fleet of sports cars. However, after retiring from the sport, his life took a drastic downturn.
His challenges included a failed enlistment in the Marines, a prison sentence of 17 months for kidnapping his family, and declaring bankruptcy. Bowe, now 52, achieved notoriety in 1992 when he won the heavyweight title, famously throwing his belt away in response to being compelled to fight Lennox Lewis.
During his fighting career, Bowe had an impressive record of 43 wins out of 45 matches, with only one loss and 33 KOs. After retiring, he attempted to join the Marines, only to leave after a mere three days of training. In a desperate move to repair his marriage, he tried to kidnap his estranged wife Judy and their children, threatening them with a knife and forcibly putting them into his car.
In the ensuing chaos, he stabbed his wife, leading to an initial sentence of 18 months to two years, which was later reduced to 30 days but ultimately reinstated to a total of 17 months upon appeal. Bowe, who filed for bankruptcy in 2005, later attempted a comeback in boxing and dabbled in wrestling to support himself.
The dramatic fall from wealth, from owning a luxury home and several Rolls Royces, forced Bowe to find work as a truck driver and bus operator. Reflecting on his past, he now stresses to today’s boxers the importance of managing their finances wisely, advising them to live within their means and be cautious about their spending habits.
Bowe also cautioned current fighters like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to be wary of dishonest financial advisors. He pointed out that many people claiming to be experts often lack genuine experience and are primarily interested in exploiting fighters for their money.
On a lighter note, Bowe enjoyed his time in trucking and even featured in acting roles, including a cameo in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. He fondly recalls his friendship with hip hop artist B.I.G., illustrating the connections he made beyond the boxing ring. Ultimately, Bowe emphasizes the need for humility in success and the importance of giving back to the community.
