Maintaining tire health is vital, and automatic tire inflation systems (ATIS) have become a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of trailer upkeep. With high adoption rates among trailers, these systems play a key role in minimizing road failures and ensuring tire longevity. As technology advances, it’s worth reassessing the additional benefits these systems can provide beyond mere inflation.
Complacency with Truck Tire Inflation
Automatic tire inflation systems have been established for some time, and many fleets acknowledge their main advantage: addressing underinflated tires. Matt Wilson, General Manager of the Controls Business Unit at Hendrickson, notes that “this is the largest issue fleet operators face concerning tires.” These systems maintain tire pressure at safe levels, reducing the likelihood of roadside breakdowns due to underinflation.
However, Wilson cautions that fleets might overlook other advantages. Simply maintaining minimum tire pressure is insufficient, particularly in dual tire setups where balancing pressure between paired tires can greatly affect wear and performance. For instance, Hendrickson’s TIREMAAX PRO system doesn’t only inflate tires with low pressure; it equalizes pressure across all wheels. This innovation tackles a prevalent issue in dual configurations: inconsistent pressure distribution.
If pressures aren’t balanced, one tire can wear out more quickly, leading to earlier failures and rising maintenance costs. According to Wilson, TIREMAAX PRO’s pressure-balancing feature not only prolongs tire life but also ensures consistent performance, ultimately decreasing both downtime and costs.
Telematics Integration in Truck Tire Inflation
Fleets also may not be fully utilizing the data integration capabilities of ATIS. Modern systems are increasingly connected with telematics for real-time data, enabling proactive maintenance. Hendrickson’s upcoming ATIS will include Bluetooth TPMS sensors that seamlessly connect with compatible telematics systems. Wilson explains, “Any telematics setup capable of receiving Bluetooth signals can capture this information.”
This connectivity allows drivers to monitor tire pressure via in-cab digital displays, providing a comprehensive overview of tractor and trailer tire conditions. “It’s crucial for preventing tire issues on the road,” Wilson adds.
Reassessing Tire Inflation Systems
By re-evaluating automatic tire inflation systems, fleet managers can make sure they are fully utilizing the latest advancements to keep trailers operating efficiently and safely. Watch the accompanying video for insights on what to consider when checking the inflation of tires equipped with ATIS.
