Truck Drivers in PEI Advised to Test for Covid-19
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – In accordance with the guidelines from the province’s Chief Public Health Office, Prince Edward Island is advising its truck drivers to undergo Covid-19 testing upon returning to the province, in addition to self-isolation measures.
Testing Schedule for Drivers
Truck drivers and rotating workers must be tested within two days upon their return, again four to seven days later, and once more between ten to twelve days if they remain in the province.
Guidelines for the First 14 Days
During the first 14 days back home, drivers are urged to avoid public spaces, refrain from visiting or entertaining individuals outside their household, and avoid volunteering or working in situations that involve interactions with outsiders.
Precautions While at Home
“Interaction with household members is allowed, but physical distance is not required unless you become symptomatic. If symptoms appear, visit a testing clinic immediately, rather than waiting for your next scheduled test,” states a memo issued by the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association (APTA).
Permitted Activities
In the initial 14 days post-return, activities such as outdoor recreation in uncrowded areas and no-contact grocery pickups are allowed.
Industry Reactions
“It’s unfortunate because truck drivers already lead quite isolated lives. Now they’re asked to isolate even more,” says Colin Parsons, general manager of Seafood Express, a cross-border food carrier. “However, I understand this is for the greater good of public health.”
Challenges and Current Situation
Truck drivers have access to Covid-19 testing at the Confederation Bridge, but logistical challenges arise as they must drive to testing locations during their off-duty hours. Due to the restrictions, some drivers opt to remain on the road longer. “It is what it is,” Parsons remarks. “We hope this situation doesn’t persist indefinitely.”
The memo notes that all current Covid cases in PEI have been linked to travel from outside the Atlantic Provinces. “Given that your time at home is limited, it’s important to connect with your family and enjoy the outdoors. This freedom comes with the responsibility of keeping yourself, your family, and the PEI community safe.”
