ODOT Cracks Down on Illegal Vehicle Passes
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — According to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), 122 commercial vehicles have been issued citations for unlawfully circumventing a weigh station on the I-84. Notably, 25% of the drivers who were stopped are now temporarily out of service.
Weigh Station Regulations
Federal law mandates that trucks exceeding 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations when available. However, officials report that many drivers are ignoring these requirements and passing them by without stopping.
Enhanced Police Presence
During recent weekend protests, there was an uptick in police activity at the Portland ICE facility.
Purpose of the Operation
“This operation aimed to identify and remove fatigued and unqualified drivers from Oregon roads to reduce the risk of fatal accidents involving commercial trucks,” stated Carla Phelps, Interim Division Administrator for ODOT’s Commerce and Compliance.
Discovery of False Logs
ODOT also found several instances of inaccurate logs associated with electronic logging devices that misrepresented drivers’ hours of service.
Federal Hour Regulations
The federal government enforces strict guidelines regarding how many hours drivers can log, which varies based on whether they are transporting passengers or goods. ODOT indicated that many of the inspected drivers were logging excessive hours without proper documentation of the mandatory breaks.
