Introduction of RespondAir Heavy-Duty Rear Air Suspension
Link Manufacturing has launched its new RespondAir heavy-duty rear air suspension system, specifically designed for fire and rescue vehicles. This innovative suspension system is rated for capacities between 30,000 and 35,000 pounds and operates without torque-reactive mechanics.
Addressing Industry Needs
Mark Molitor, the senior product manager at Link Manufacturing, stated, “Through extensive voice-of-customer research with fire departments and OEMs, we identified critical needs around maintenance, stability, and equipment protection. RespondAir exemplifies Link’s commitment over the last 26 years to provide tailored solutions that tackle common challenges and offer superior performance in emergency response scenarios.”
Enhanced Stability and Reduced Chassis Movement
The RespondAir system stands out from conventional torque-reactive suspensions, which can lead to unwanted chassis movement during acceleration and braking. Its unique configuration of upper and lower control arms minimizes axle movement, easing stress on both driveline components and vehicle passengers.
Durability and Maintenance Improvements
Link has designed this suspension with robust and larger natural rubber bushings, providing an increased surface area that alleviates stress and lowers maintenance requirements while extending the lifespan of the system. Moreover, the switch from U-bolt connections to expertly engineered weld-on axle brackets contributes to enhanced reliability over time. The RespondAir systems are also designed to seamlessly integrate with Meritor/Dana axles.
Innovative Features for Superior Performance
The system’s V-Rod configuration offers better lateral stability and minimizes tail swing compared to traditional torque and track bar systems. High-strength cast steel parts and seamless tubing construction ensure it can withstand demanding duty cycles.
Optimal Applications and Integration
RespondAir is engineered for both single axle (30k-35k) and tandem axle (60k-70k) setups, making it ideal for various heavy-duty fire apparatus, including aerial trucks, rescue pumpers, and tankers. It incorporates Link’s 500 Series height control valves, designed to deliver the highest flow rates for excellent leveling. Additionally, the air suspension includes a rapid air-dump feature, allowing fire trucks to lower their height for better access to older fire station buildings with low door clearances.
Warranty and Maintenance Features
Link offers a warranty for the RespondAir system, which covers structural and wear components, with availability through OEM partners starting in late 2025. All RespondAir suspensions benefit from Link’s Link-KOAT migratory self-healing metal treatment, which provides corrosion resistance and protection against rust, even in harsh conditions involving de-icing chemicals or severe road wear.
Commitment to Reliability and Performance
“By creating a genuine non-torque-reactive system with enhanced bushings and removing traditional U-bolt axle connections, we have developed a suspension that meets industry expectations, significantly cuts down maintenance, and improves stability and ride comfort,” Molitor concluded. “This purpose-driven design, supported by our unparalleled warranty, underscores our dedication to equipping fire departments with reliable apparatus when it matters most.”
