Prevalence of Health Issues Among Truck Drivers
Studies show that truck drivers commonly experience cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and back pain. Alarmingly, half of all truckers suffer from at least one of these conditions, which could contribute to an increased risk of premature death.
Research Initiative by Dr. Jalila Jbilou
Dr. Jalila Jbilou, a researcher from the University of Moncton, is investigating the health challenges faced by truck drivers. Her research involves 200 drivers in New Brunswick and aims to provide convenient health services while they are on the road.
Innovative Health Solutions
Understanding that truckers often avoid seeking medical care due to work commitments, Jbilou tailored the available services accordingly. Her team equips drivers with a smartphone, smartwatch, blood pressure monitor, blood sugar monitor, thermometer, resistance bands, and educational materials in both English and French.
The THAT Project
The Truckers’ Health Adaptive Technology (THAT) project, which is expected to conclude in 2025, examines drivers’ physical, mental, and social well-being. Recruitment for participants is primarily through word of mouth until June 2024, assigning them randomly to either an experimental or control group.
Accessible Medical Support
In the experimental group, drivers receive comprehensive health services, while the control group utilizes existing services. Dr. Jbilou aims to identify the issues drivers face with current options. If a control group member encounters significant health issues, they are transitioned to the experimental group.
Improving Technological Literacy
Some participants used traditional flip phones and faced challenges with technology. The team worked to enhance their digital skills, sometimes assisting them in creating email accounts and learning how to use smartphones. Jbilou noted that drivers welcomed this training, recognizing the team’s supportive intentions.
Mental and Physical Health Focus
The study also emphasizes mental well-being, offering physical exercises for relaxation along with mindfulness meditation recordings of varying lengths. Participants are engaged in activities like “10 km in 10 days,” with incentives such as gift cards available for winners. Initial health assessments and blood tests are provided, with a follow-up after 12 months to evaluate health outcomes and the program’s efficacy.
