CLEVELAND, Ohio — Anticipating Baseball Season
As the Guardians’ equipment truck vanishes into the western skyline, it’s a clear indication that baseball season is imminent. However, this year’s “truck day” presents a unique challenge for some staff members due to ongoing construction at Progressive Field.
Busy Days Ahead for Clubhouse Staff
According to Brandon Biller, the assistant home clubhouse manager, the next four days will be among the busiest of the offseason as workers prepare the semi-trailer with personal belongings and gear from players, coaches, and staff. This is all in anticipation of the three-day journey to the team’s training facility in Goodyear, Arizona.
Challenges of Ongoing Renovations
This year, the $202 million Phase 2 renovations at the ballpark are making things more difficult for Biller and his team. With limited access to the usual loading dock, the truck is currently stationed at the Andrews Moving & Storage warehouse in Streetsboro, where it is being partially loaded.
Preparation for Loading and Departure
Throughout the week, workers have been dropping off items at the warehouse to get ready for Thursday’s loading and departure. “The current setup around the ballpark is pretty congested, so we’re trying to navigate around it while ensuring we get our own tasks done,” Biller noted.
What Goes on the Truck?
The truck is set to transport a variety of items, including golf clubs, video equipment, uniforms, workout machines, sunflower seeds, water, mustard, bicycles, approximately 2,500 dozen baseballs, and more than 100 gallons of laundry detergent.
Transition to Goodyear and New Uniforms
Drivers from Andrews will cover 2,033 miles over three days before reaching training camp, where pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on February 11. This year also involves integrating new uniforms, which have been shipped directly to Goodyear, alleviating some of the logistical challenges.
Excitement for New Facilities
After relocating for an extended nine-game road trip due to construction, the Guardians will return to Cleveland just in time for their April 8 home opener against the White Sox. They will step into a completely renovated clubhouse featuring upgraded facilities, marking a significant improvement since the ballpark’s opening in 1994. “After years of planning, seeing it come to life will be a rewarding challenge,” Biller added.
