Growing Support for the Trucker Bathroom Access Act
WASHINGTON — There is increasing backing for the Trucker Bathroom Access Act.
On February 13, Representatives Brian Babin (R-Texas) and Jefferson Van Drew (R-N.J.) expressed their commitment to advancing this legislation through Congress for presidential approval.
Details of the Bipartisan Measure
The bipartisan bill, known as HR3869, aims to guarantee that truckers have access to restroom facilities while picking up or delivering cargo, receiving notable support from within the industry.
Industry Endorsements
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has expressed strong endorsement for the proposal. Todd Spencer, president and CEO of OOIDA, emphasized that “over 70% of America’s freight is carried exclusively by trucks,” yet drivers face daily challenges in accessing restroom facilities during their work.
Spencer praised Representatives Nehls and Houlahan for their leadership on this issue, thanking them for their efforts in bringing this bipartisan legislation forward to enhance truckers’ working conditions.
Support from Women In Trucking
Ellen Voie, founder of the Women In Trucking Association, is also adding her voice to the support for this bill. She highlighted that as more women join the trucking industry, access to restroom facilities has become even more crucial.
Legislative Provisions
According to Rep. Nehls, who reintroduced the legislation, the law would stipulate that:
- Retailers, warehouses, and other businesses must provide truckers with access to restroom facilities during cargo pick-ups or deliveries.
- Businesses are not required to build new restrooms; they must allow truckers to use existing facilities available to customers or employees.
- Operators of ports and terminals must also provide bathroom access for drayage drivers.
Challenges for Truck Drivers
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) articulated that the economy relies heavily on truck drivers, yet they face significant challenges, particularly regarding restroom access at delivery points. She noted that this issue is especially pressing for female drivers, a demographic increasingly present in the field.
Houlahan expressed her pride in reintroducing this bipartisan bill, asserting that truckers deserve the same rights to restroom access that other employees have in their workplaces.
