Hope Zvara’s journey began in 2017 during a professional networking event in Wisconsin, where a conversation inspired her to contemplate yoga for truck drivers. “We discussed different yoga applications,” Zvara recalls. “He asked if I had anything suitable for truckers in their cabs.” This sparked the idea for her business, leading to the creation of Mother Trucker Yoga within a year.
Though Zvara isn’t a truck driver herself, her father’s demanding job as a sewer pipe layer sparked her passion for supporting underappreciated workers. She understands the hardships truck drivers face; unlike office workers who can take breaks and stretch, drivers remain confined to their seats for long periods. “If their wheels aren’t turning, they aren’t earning,” she explains.
Mother Trucker Yoga prioritizes practical and straightforward techniques by using props found in trucks and at rest stops. Zvara adapts various yoga poses to appear casual, like tying shoelaces, which she claims provides drivers with a sense of empowerment. The platform includes a YouTube channel and app with short instructional videos addressing common concerns like back pain and leg discomfort. Additionally, she conducts live events at venues like the Mid-America Trucking Show.
Offering audio sessions that drivers can follow while on the road, Zvara teaches techniques for reducing back pain and stretching neck and shoulders—all designed for the unique trucking lifestyle. Her approach has motivated many drivers to make positive changes after realizing how simple it is to integrate yoga into their routine.
Benefits of Yoga for Truck Drivers
A study from the National Institutes of Health reveals that a majority of truckers perceive themselves as out of shape, with large numbers facing serious health issues such as obesity and diabetes. Additionally, many truck drivers experience emotional challenges, including loneliness and depression, with suicide rates alarmingly high. Zvara highlights the importance of meditation and mindfulness in her teachings to help drivers manage emotional stress and foster self-awareness.
Adopting the Yoga for Truckers Mindset
Cheryl Vickers, who received her commercial driver’s license almost a decade ago, discovered the impact of her lifestyle on her health. After adopting practices from Mother Trucker Yoga, she transformed her life, losing significant weight and stopping her blood pressure medication. Vickers emphasizes that yoga is not just about physical exercise; it positively influences mental health, addressing issues like anxiety and loneliness.
Zvara aims to make yoga accessible by promoting quick, bite-sized practices that accumulate over time. She aspires to inspire one million drivers toward better health and wellness. Building on the community around her Mother Trucker Yoga brand, she estimates that over 200,000 drivers have already benefited from her initiatives.
Ultimately, Zvara seeks to challenge the misconceptions surrounding trucking, mental health, and yoga. By highlighting the importance of wellness in the trucking profession, she aims to elevate its image and ensure that the people behind the wheel receive the recognition they deserve.
