Support for Legislation Ensuring Restroom Access for Truckers
A prominent trucking organization advocating for women drivers has expressed its backing for a new law aimed at securing restroom access for truckers.
On June 6, 2025, bipartisan legislation was presented by U.S. Representatives Troy Nehls (R-TX) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) to guarantee that truck drivers can use restroom facilities while picking up or delivering freight.
“The Women In Trucking Association is grateful for the leadership of Representatives Nehls and Houlahan in addressing this essential need for drivers,” stated Jennifer Hedrick, CAE, president and CEO of WIT. “Such changes promote the recruitment of more women into the trucking field and enhance the safety, security, and efficiency of our supply chain.”
Urgent Need for Women Truck Drivers
As the number of women entering the trucking industry increases, the issue of restroom access becomes increasingly critical, Hedrick emphasized.
“To perform their jobs with confidence and dignity, women truck drivers require privacy, sanitary conditions, and safety,” she remarked. “The lack of restroom access makes it more difficult to attract and retain women, jeopardizing efforts to diversify the workforce.”
Key Provisions of the Legislation
The proposed legislation includes the following provisions:
- Mandates that retailers, warehouses, and other businesses grant truckers access to restroom facilities while they are picking up or delivering cargo.
- Does not require businesses to build new restrooms but requires access if they already have facilities available for customers or employees.
- Obligates operators of ports and terminals to provide restroom access to drayage drivers.
Broad Support from Industry Associations
Various industry groups, including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and the American Trucking Associations, as well as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), have shown their support for this legislation.
