As a psychologist traveling across Arizona for evaluations, the extensive drives used to wear me out—until I got my Tesla Cybertruck equipped with self-driving technology.

While some motorists express their frustration toward my choice due to Elon Musk’s reputation, they fail to see how beneficial this truck is for my daily work.

A Journey to Self-Driving

My obsession with Tesla began while I was a doctoral student in 2012, commuting weekly from Phoenix to Tucson for clinical training. Those drives were exhausting, often requiring me to take quick naps to continue safely. I dreamt of a future where cars could drive themselves, inspired by my childhood show, “The Jetsons.”

By early 2013, I learned about Tesla’s Full Self-Driving capabilities and decided I wouldn’t buy another vehicle until I owned a Tesla. In 2021, I finally leased a Model 3, named Ma’Lady, which became my reliable partner for over 35,000 miles across Arizona.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

When my Model 3 lease ended in 2024, I sought a larger vehicle that met specific tax requirements for my business. The Cybertruck was my only choice. I hesitated at first due to the controversies surrounding Tesla, but realizing how much I needed the Full Self-Driving feature, I decided to go for it.

After a health scare, the urgency to reduce stress in my life became apparent, and I swiftly arranged for my Cybertruck purchase. Within days, I was driving my new vehicle.

Public Reactions to the Cybertruck

Driving the Cybertruck has drawn a mix of reactions. Children often wave and take pictures, creating delightful moments. However, many adults respond negatively, sometimes aggressively voicing their disdain for Tesla and its CEO. A friend even refused to ride in my truck due to his views on Musk.

I worry that public opinion could escalate to a more aggressive stance because of handling such a controversial vehicle. Importantly, I bought the Cybertruck before Musk became a divisive figure, but I cannot undo my investment.

The Practical Benefits of the Cybertruck

For me, the Cybertruck isn’t just a statement; it’s a functional choice that enhances safety on Arizona’s challenging roads. The technology keeps me centered and vigilant, easing the mental strain of long drives.

Given my financial situation, selling or trading in the Cybertruck isn’t feasible. When I’m ready for my next vehicle, I hope to find a comparable self-driving option from another brand. Until then, I am focusing on the positives my Cybertruck offers.
