Western Star Trucks, a part of Daimler Truck North America, has introduced enhanced safety features to its vocational X-Series models, specifically the 47X and 49X. The company emphasizes that the new models prioritize safety, integrating a range of advanced safety features as standard equipment.
Active Brake Assist
Detroit Assurance’s Active Brake Assist (ABA5) is now a standard offering for vocational customers. Owners of the 47X and 49X trucks can access these safety enhancements irrespective of their powertrain configuration, according to Western Star.
Backup Alerts
The X-Series models now include a factory-installed backup alert system, which features a 7-inch integrated touchscreen, a backup camera, and a reverse proximity sensor. This system is designed to blend seamlessly with the cab’s aesthetic, as stated by Western Star.
Job Site Safety
“This represents a significant step forward in enhancing safety at job sites,” remarked Aaron Scates, vice president of vocational and medium duty market development at DTNA. “Given the diverse range of applications in the vocational market, these integrated safety features provide owners and operators peace of mind while on the job.”
Expansion of Detroit Assurance
Western Star noted that Detroit Assurance encompasses a range of safety systems aimed at reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions by warning drivers about potential risks. Previously limited to Detroit engine customers, these advanced safety features are now available to all buyers, including those opting for third-party engines. Features like ABA5, Side Guard Assist (SGA), lane departure warning, intelligent high-beam, and automatic wipers and headlamps will now benefit all Western Star 47X and 49X customers.
Fully Integrated Back-Up Camera
In contrast to retrofit options, two choices for backup camera installation are now available: an end-of-frame mounted camera or a fully prepared camera with an extended harness for easy relocation by end customers or truck equipment manufacturers (TEMs). This new integration enhances visibility through the 7-inch touchscreen display that also supports steering wheel controls, hands-free calling, and connections via USB-C and Bluetooth. The interactive display will feature standard GPS navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
With the implementation of this new backup alert system, customers will benefit from a factory-integrated solution that minimizes upfit time. All essential installation components will be provided from the factory, and an optional extension harness can be ordered for specific body requirements. This initiative seeks to streamline the installation process by allowing direct mounting of in-cab display units to the camera system. The Backup Alert System, including the interactive touchscreen and backup camera with proximity sensor, will be available for ordering in spring 2024, with deliveries set to begin later this year.
