The Life of Long-Haul Trucking

Long-haul trucking is a unique profession that offers a lifestyle distinctly different from a typical job. It involves extensive travel, sleeping on the road, and discovering new places that one might not encounter otherwise.

Two Decades on the Road

With 20 years of experience in the trucking industry, Gord Magill has traveled to locations such as New Zealand, Australia, the far reaches of Canada, and the U.S.-Mexico border. However, he now desires to settle down more and is considering a shift away from long-haul trucking.

Gord’s Background and Training

Originally from Ontario, Canada, Gord is currently navigating the immigration process to the U.S. to be with his wife. His passion for trucking traces back to his grandfather, a tank driver in WWII, and has been cultivated through family ties and hands-on experience in local trucking companies.

Experiences and Unique Gigs

Gord’s career has featured various loads—from hauling steel rolling pins for major automotive companies to transporting airplane wings. His diverse experiences include working on ice roads fueling diamond mines and even supplying ice at the Burning Man festival, showcasing the variety inherent in the trucking profession.

Challenges and Rewards

While the choice of hauls often depends on the employer, Gord has experienced a mixture of routine contracts and random assignments. He emphasizes the importance of having a good relationship with employers and valuing autonomy on the job. The challenges of the role, such as navigating remote areas and dealing with mechanical issues, are balanced by the rewarding experiences and friendships he has built along the way.

Future Aspirations

As he plans for a shift in his career, Gord reflects on the aspects of trucking he’ll miss—including the freedom of the open road and the stunning scenery. However, he’s eager to reduce his time on the road due to personal relationships and a desire for stability.

Understanding the Trucking Lifestyle

Gord believes that long-haul trucking is more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle shaped by myriad factors. Recognizing the complexities of the profession could help others appreciate its challenges and rewards, which differ significantly from those of typical office or factory jobs.
