Tribute to Trucking Advocate Dave MacMillan
Renowned trucking veteran and YouTube personality Dave MacMillan has passed away.
He died on August 15, 2024, at the age of 68, as reported in an online obituary.
MacMillan was well-known for his YouTube channel, Smart-Trucking, where he offered straightforward insights on a variety of topics related to the trucking industry over the last twelve years.
Launching his trucking journey in 1976, MacMillan began by driving gasoline in the Canadian Rockies as a company driver. In the 1990s, he and his wife Cathy owned a trucking business. Although he semi-retired in 2021, he continued to drive locally, amassing over five million miles in his extensive career.
According to his obituary, after transitioning to semi-retirement, Dave, along with Cathy and later their son Nick, created the successful YouTube channel Smart-Trucking. The channel focused on mentoring and supporting truck drivers. Through countless videos, live streams, blog entries, interviews, articles, and newsletters, Dave became a prominent advocate for professional truckers, discussing critical issues such as driver wages, safety, and working conditions. He earned the respectful title of ‘Voice of the Trucker’ for his willingness to tackle challenging topics that others often avoided.
Dave emphasized the privilege of being a professional truck driver, reminding his community of the significant responsibilities associated with the role. His influence reached far beyond local borders, impacting drivers across Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the U.K., Europe, Norway, Sweden, Alaska, Hawaii, and more. His dedication to the well-being of truck drivers was evident and heartfelt.
A memorial video commemorating Dave’s legacy will be released on the Smart-Trucking channel on September 27.
